Esther Chang: Scientific Evidence for Yoga Health Benefits

Yoga relieves lower back pain.  Twists can wring out toxins from your organs.  Headstands can counter memory loss and insomnia.  Yoga can help you live longer.

Have you ever heard these or other similar claims made about the health benefits of yoga?  Yoga is wildly popular these days, and yoga research is also expanding to address these claims.

Join Esther Chang on a journey of discovery, where she will guide you through the scientific research to reach an overview on the current state of evidence on yoga.  A background in science is not necessary to participate in this accessible 6-day module.

We will cover the effects of asana, pranayama and meditation practices on human anatomy, physiology, psychology and even cell biology.  Mornings will start with contemplative practices and theory, followed by asana practices in the afternoon and experiential “mini-labs” and demonstrations.

My interest in yoga began in 1998 when I was looking for a way to relieve stress during my Master's studies. I got more than I bargained for when I signed up for a yoga class: I fell in love and discovered a new way of approaching life. I teach styles from the Ashtanga yoga lineage (Ashtanga, Power, Vinyasa) flavoured with the precise, technical approach to alignment of Iyengar yoga. My classes are rigorous and physically demanding but taught within a calm and accepting atmosphere. From the science of yoga to anatomy and mythology, join me in cultivating a practice of connection to yourself, others and the world. I also completed my Ph.D. studies on the ecology of Schiermonnikoog.
